Good Morning, Peace and Blessings from Lahh Woods at NYDLBALL.com RADIO. This is Day TWO at "The Reason for Pre-Season!" That's right Camp Concrete is over. Yesterday was Tryout Day! All the hard work through the summer and fall paid off yesterday!...All those miles we ran...All the push-ups...All the time spent managing our weaknesses and sharpening our strengths showed yesterday! This is Day Two at "The Reason for Pre-Season"..."Where we Show & Prove and Prepare Not to Loose"...6:23 AM EST. We are once again coming to you Live via all things good and with the Blessings of the Creator I pray that our steps, words, and actions be ordered in a Positive way...All Day! Tryout Day was an exciting day. You never know who's going to show up and surprise you as a strong unknown future teammate aka "The Walk On" aka "The X-Factor." I think things went very well. I feel confident that my presence was felt and during the entire workout. I felt comfortable and upbeat. Early in the tryout there was some leg lifts and crawling exercises that I had never done before...a slight bit of a challenge. However, the laps and the suicide runs were like 25% of my morning runs. I smiled confidently to myself when I saw a few ballas breathing hard, winded, with the all telling hands on their waist. We didn't drill at all, which was interesting, the coaching staff cut straight to the chase and we scrimmaged...HARD! I was not selected in the initial 10 to start the scrimmage...I think to myself, "this in not a good sign." Momentarily, I think back to my biddy-ball tryouts in the BX...1960's...PS 18 or Mitchell Gym [40 to 50] skilled ballas in the gym...I was afraid and nervous then. I smile at the distant memory and re-focus on studying the players on the court right now. Who are the ball-handlers? Who is playing defense? Who are the shooters? Who has the low post game? aka [Down Low] Who's in shape? Who is not? I access the strengths and weaknesses of the combinations the coaches have on the court. I make a mental note of all of this and wait for my group to take the floor. We are the Second Unit. In Senior Division ball [1970's] I was usually Second Unit...I am still comfortable there...I love football and the Second Unit to me is like Special Teams. Trust me or ask any respectable football or basketball coach, "Does Special Teams Win Games?" He will look at you as if you are "from another planet" and the answer will be "YES!!" Back then I would never start. We [S.U.] would come into the game towards the end of the first quarter/begining of the second quarter...play hard Defense, with Minimal Turnovers, thereby cracking the game wide open and return to the bench with a 15-20 point lead. l remember the starters coming back onto the court, sometimes barely acknowledging our efforts, but the coaches would give us Mucho-Mucho LOVE! Madd Shout Out to ALL of the Second Unit Ballas out there. Keep your head up. Your time to shine is coming soon! Tryout Day was a Great Day. All the preparation, over the last 3 months, has paid off...To Be Continued... Question of the Day is-"What do you do if you're not selected to start?" [A]-Quit the team [B]-Shoot the ball every time you get it, to show them what you got [C] Don't play any defense because, yo, they can't be dissin' you like that in front of your peoples [sic] [D] Study the players on the court. Get a grasp of the off & def systems the coaches are implementing. Be patient, STAY POSITIVE, and Work Hard!! [ANSWER KEY] If you need to be told the correct answer, I will continue to pray for you.
