Hotel Employee Basketball League

interview Pointguard Tim Barrett

Tim Barett is a valuable fixture in the New York Hotel Employee League.  He has achieved what, probably, no other balla in this league has accomplished.  Tim has 8 New York Hotel League Championship Titles!!  He has played on 3 different teams and has participated in a total of 14 seasons!! Currently, this talented and successfull journeyman is playing for the Millennium Broadway Ambassadors and I'm glad to be able to call him "teammate."  In reality, when he's on top of his game, getting buckets in transition, and playing solid "D", any game, regardless of the competition level, is contestable.  With his playing experience and leadership skills, he's like a coach on the court...and experience plus talent/effort wins "Chips!"

Pointguard: Why did you leave the Harvard Club, an established team, and join the 2nd year Millennium Ambassadors?

Tim Barrett: I really enjoy being a  part of the building process of a team.  Seeing teammates grow as ballplayers, and their developing a better understanding of the game is enriching.

PG: How does this club [Ambassadors] differ from the teams that you've played with in the past?

TB: This team has a lot of players that have not really played at the next level, but are very athletic.  The Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza team of the early ninetys had it all!  Athleticism, Smarts, drive, and an understanding of how to put all of those things together.  Then there's the contrast with the Harvard Club which is an older less athletic team, but was always strong as oxen in body and mind.  They are also an extremely intelligent team that knows how to win even when they have off nights...and there are ugly wins.  And for the most part we were undflappable.

PG: What has your ex-teammates [Harvard] said to you when you've seen them?

TB: Well, Manute said, "I know you felt you had to do this change, but come back next year and all is forgiven.  We're gonna win this year without you, but we don't like to work this hard!" And my boy Anthony McGann said, "[stuttering] Don't take this A## whippin' personally!"

PG: Who are the premiere, veteran, players in this league and who are the young guns?

TB: The premire veteran players are Chris [Hilton], Manute, Greer, Frank, and Anthony [Harvard Club], Ralph DeJesus [Millennium Broadway], Panama [Palace], Sweet Lou [Sheraton].  There are a lot of talented young guns also...I just don't know thier names.

PG: As an experienced player[code for old timer] what advatages do you have over so of the younger, athletic, players?

TB: Knowing how to study a player's strengths and weaknesses.  How to bait or lead them into their weaknesses.  Overall knowledge of the game and it's flow.

PG: Has the quality of the New York Hotel Employee League declined or increased over the years?

TB: Definately increased!  There used to be two or three elite teams in the league, but now there are about six or seven.

PG: Thanks for the interview Tim and let's make this year a banner year for the vets and for the Ambassadors! Peace and Defense
